Law Society President visits University

Law Society President visits Derby President of the Law Society met with representatives of Student Law Society and Derby Junior Lawyers

28 March 2015

The President of the Law Society of England & Wales, Andrew Caplen, visited the University of Derby to meet with the representatives of the University’s Student Law Society and representatives from Derby Junior Lawyers, including Alex Cherry and Carri Swann, the Law Triathlon winners.

The annual Law Triathlon and Judges' Q&A, held several weeks before Mr. Caplen’s visit, was a great success. The competition, which is in its 9th year, is judged by solicitors from the local profession. Eight teams, consisting of a University of Derby LLB student and a recently qualified legal professional, compete for cash prizes. In addition to the competition, there is a Judges Q&A session after the triathlon with a panel of judges from the local judiciary taking questions from the floor.

The Law Triathlon is an invaluable opportunity for competitors to showcase and hone their legal skills, to receive valuable advice from junior lawyers and local practitioners, to network with local employers and to hear the judiciaries views on local and national hot topics affecting the justice system.

Many of the competitors were graduates from the University, including Andrew Woodward, a newly qualified solicitor at Flint Bishop in Derby. Andrew studied law at Derby, graduating in 2004.

The President of the Student Law Society, law student Alex Cherry won best overall team with Carri Swann, a trainee with Geldards. Carri also won best individual negotiator and advocate and donated her monetary prize of £475 to Coram Children’s Legal Charity. JP Malcolm Prentice, who attended the Judges Q & A was so impressed with this he has offered to match her donation.
