Sarah Russell - Your career - University of Derby

Sarah Russell, Parliamentary Caseworker and Cabinet Member of Derby City Council

LLB graduate Sarah Russell is now achieving success in the world of politics and local government – thanks to the skills and knowledge she gained at the University of Derby.

Working in local government

Sarah is not only parliamentary caseworker for Derby North MP Chris Williamson but also an elected cabinet member on Derby City Council, with a portfolio which covers business, finance and democracy.

Sarah comments: “I can say with certainty that the things I learned – but more importantly practised – on the LLB have helped me in my current position. My advocacy skills are certainly valuable in the council chamber when I am arguing my point!"

Studying at Derby

“The course was fantastic. We studied all aspects of the law as well as gaining real experience in its application, rather than just learning the academic side. That is what sets the law courses in Derby apart from anywhere else in the country.

“The lecturers at the University were absolutely superb. I considered them to be friends as well as teachers, some of whom I am still in touch with regularly.

“We were taught the basics we needed, to be able to advocate in a courtroom situation, sit and listen to clients, and argue points in a family case. I have no doubt that this helped me develop the transferable skills that I use in my work today.

“I graduated in 2010 and can honestly say that the whole experience at the University was one which I would not change. It definitely helped me to become the person I am today – and it encouraged me to stay here in Derby.”

LLB graduate Sarah Rusell - head and shoulders shot “I would certainly recommend the University of Derby. You will always get the support you need as well as a top class education. Plus Derby is a vibrant city with plenty of career opportunities.”
