FAQs

Why can I not login to the Panopto recorder?

There are four possible reasons why you may not be able to login to use the Panopto Recorder

1. There is no internet connection

2. Logging in to the system is only available via Course Resources

3. You are a student and do not have 'creator' access to the system

4. You are a tutor and have not set up a module or programme using the Panopto Tool in Course Resources (Blackboard) yet

Can I record using Panopto without an internet connection?

Yes it is possible to make a recording offline and upload them at a later time.  Before taking your PC or laptop offline to record, you must log in to the recorder using an internet connection and set the 'remember me' option.  The disadvantage of doing this using the Panopto Recorder for PC is that you cannot view your recordings until they have been uploaded and published.

Why can my students not access Panopto Videos from other modules/previous years?

This problem occurs when links to Panopto videos are copied between Course Resources modules, usually when module content is copied from one academic year to the next.  In order to fix this issue see this guide: What if I need to share a video across multiple modules?

Known Issues

Using USB microphones with a Windows PC results in too low a recording level

To fix this set the microphone level higher in the Windows Control Panel:

  1. Click on the 'Start' button to open the menu and click 'Control Panel'
  2. In the Control Panel click on 'Sound'
  3. In the Sound window click the 'Recording' tab, select 'Microphone - USB Audio' from the list and click the 'Properties' button
  4. In the 'Microphone Properties' window, click the 'Levels' tab
  5. Click and drag the volume slider all the way to the right to set a higher recording level.  Click 'OK'.

Panopto videos do not playback in Google Chrome v.23 in Windows 7

There is a known compatibility issue with Microsoft Silverlight version 5 and Google Chrome version 23 in Windows 7.
Fixes:

  • Use a different browser - the problem does not currently occur in other browsers
  • Upgrade Google Chrome from version 23 to 24 or higher

Link to Panopto Tool does not appear in the Module Tools menu
When setting up a module in Course Resources (Blackboard) the Panopto tool is not available from the Module Tools menu.  To make the Panopto tool available in your module, the following work-around is required:
Creating a link to the Panopto Tool in Course Resources

1. In the Course Resources module, hover mouse pointer over 'Add Menu Item' button and Click 'Tool Link'

 1In the course resources module

2. Name the Tool Link e.g. Lecture Recordings and choose 'Panopto Course Tool Application' from the drop down list.  Click the 'Submit' button

Name tool link

The Tool Link you have created will now appear in the module menu.
Tip: Giving students access to this tool will enable them to access recordings as soon as they are processed.  Leave the Available to Users option unchecked unless you are sure that you want to publish links to your recordings without vetting them first.
