Screen Capture - Jing

Jing

What is it?

Jing is a free software from TechSmith© which can be used to create images as well as record videos, with voiceover, of up to 5 minutes in length of what you see on your computer screen.

How does it work?

Jing allows you to select part of your computer screen and captures this as an image or a video. The images and videos can then be made available in Course Resources (Blackboard) for students to access. Images can also be added to documents or uploaded to Course Resources.

What can I use it for?

  • Introducing your module
  • Introducing a subject or topic
  • Talking over assessment criteria
  • Providing short formative feedback on student work
  • 'How to' videos for students
  • Answering student FAQs
  • Explaining a computer tool or software

What preparation do I need to do?

  • Install Jing on the computer
  • Create a Jing account
  • Make sure that you have anything that you want to capture open on the computer screen
  • If using a microphone make sure that it is plugged in and working

Where do I get it from?

Jing can be downloaded from http://www.techsmith.com/download/jing/ or you can install it on University machines via UoD Software.
