Improving student induction

Why Improve Induction? A web resource including details of staff development sessions, staff testimonials and printable handouts.

We should facilitate as much as possible students' sense of identity and community within learning cohorts at the University

This particular area aims to improve induction by further understanding the following components and implications of induction. Staff development sessions will be on offer to discuss and implement these improvements and suggestions.

Giving better context

  • An early understanding of the overall nature of the module and its relationship with the rest of a student's programme gives greater context and meaning to subsequent studies and activities.

Enabling better use of support services

  • The demands of learning are changing and there is an array of support services that can be linked to.
  • Web technologies can improve accessibility to both these support services as well as the important information about their modules; audio/ video technologies can improve the comprehension and presentation of them.

Establishing a learning community amongst your students

  • Learning is a social phenomenon.
  • Students can learn from each other and develop mutually supportive relationships that can support their learning.
  • Increasingly people, students in particular, are using web communication technologies to help develop their sense of identity and community. We should facilitate as much as possible that sense of identity and community within learning cohorts at the University.
