Finding the Evaluation Area
The majority of tools for viewing student activity can be found in the Evaluation area of the Control Panel. This is found in the lower-left-hand corner of the module (see below).
- Click on the Evaluation heading to expand the section.
Performance Dashboard
The Performance Dashboard can provide you with a quick and easy overview of student access to the module. You can view a list of students attached to the module and the number of days since they last accessed it.
-
Expand the Evaluation section of the Control Panel.
-
Click on the Performance Dashboard link.
-
Once the Performance Dashboard loads, click on the Show All button towards the lower-right-hand side of the page, to ensure that all students are listed.
-
Consult the Days Since Last Module Access or the Last Module Access columns to determine which students have not visited the module recently.
Having not visited the module recently does not mean that the student is not engaging with the course. For example they could still be reading around the subject or working on their assignment. However, it can be considered as a warning sign.
Running a Module Report
Most of the information regarding student access to the module is available through Module Reports. Most reports follow the same general process in order to view information:
-
Expand the Evaluation section of the Control Panel.
-
Click on the Module Reports link.
-
You will see the list of reports.
-
Move the mouse pointer over the title of the report that you want to run.
-
Click on the options button (round button with down-facing arrow) that appears.
-
Choose Run from the option list.

Depending on the type of report that you are running, there will be at most 4 settings to decide on.

Select Format
You may have the option to choose a PDF (for download and email/printing), an Excel file (for download and further analysis), or HTML (for viewing online). All options will provide the same information, but if you just want to view the information, then HTML is the best option.
Select a Start Date
This is the earliest date that information should be gathered from. To ensure that all of the required information is gathered, you should choose the day before the actual date that you want. For example if you wanted all of the information from the past week, then you should choose a start date that is 8 days ago.
Select an End Date
This is the last date that information should be gathered from. Information is often only available for the day before the current date. If you want to know about access today, then you will need to wait until tomorrow to run the report.
Select Users
This will be a list of staff and students attached to the module. To choose all users, click on the first name in the list, scroll to the bottom of the list, hold the Shift key and click on the last name in the list. You can also hold the Ctrl key and click on names to individually select/deselect them.
-
Once you have made your selection, click on the Submit button.
-
Depending on your choice of format, you will either be asked to download a file or be presented with the information.
Interpreting Reports
The more recently added reports, such as Course Activity Overview and Student Overview for Single Course, are quite easy to interpret. They display information such as the number of hours that students have spent in a particular area of the module.
Older reports, such as All User Activity inside Content Areas, display grids of numbers - sometimes described as hits (see below).

Choosing a Report
There are several different options for displaying statistics on student access. These are mainly grouped together in the Module Reports area. Each report is intended to have a different purpose, but there is some overlap between them.
Consult the table below to see which of the available reports is most likely to provide the information that you want. If your question is not answered in the table below, then please contact the Learning Technologists, and they may be able to make a recommendation.
