Groups are useful for group work. When groups are set up in Blackboard, group members have access to various tools they can use to facilitate group work e.g. blogs, wikis, discussion boards, file exchange, e-mail.

Creating a Group
Before you start
Groups are created from within a module content area as follows:
- Open the module and ensure that Edit Mode is turned on as highlighted below.

- Click on Tools on the course menu

- Click on the Groups link

- You can create either a single group or a set of groups
- To create a single group, hover over Create Single Group and from the drop down menu click on the desired enrolment way either Manual Enroll or Self-Enroll.
Manual Enroll allows you to add the students you want to be in a particular group
Self-Enroll allows students to enrol themselves to the groups created
Creating a Manual Enrolment group
- For Manual Enroll, click on Manual Enroll from the drop down menu

Type the name for the group and a description for it in the appropriate fields.

Select the tools you want to be available to the group. To make the tools unavailable, deselect them.

- If you want to grade the group's contributions, then select Grade and type in the total marks expected in the Points possible box.
- Tick the box Allow Personalisation to allow the group to personalise their space if needed.
- Select the members you want to be in the group created

- Click the right arrow > to add them, and you should see the names added to the right hand box for Selected Items.
- Click the submit button.
- The group should now appear in the groups list and a message of successful creation of the group is displayed.
Accessing the Group

Click on the group link to open it and see the elements of the group displayed.

Creating a Self- Enrolment Group
- For Self-Enroll, click on Self-Enroll from the Create Single Group drop down menu

The following 3 steps are the same as for Manual Enrolment
- Type the name for the group and a description for it in the appropriate fields
- Select the tools you want to be available to the group
- Tick or untick the personalisation box as necessary
Then,
- Fill in the Sign-up options form including 'Name' for the Sign-up Sheet and instructions on how students sign-up; value for the maximum number of members for the group.
- If needed, tick the boxes to display the members of the group, and to allow students to sign-up from the Groups listing page.
- Click the submit button.

- The group should now be listed under Groups and also My Groups on the left hand panel.


How to join the Group
- When Edit Mode is Off (Student View), you can see the group listed as in the following image.
- To sign up to the group, click on the Sign Up button. (This is how the students can sign up to the group.)

- The Sign Up Sheet will now be displayed

- Click on the Sign Up button again to join the group.
- The group profile will now be displayed showing the names of the group members already signed-up (if the option to display the names was ticked in the settings).

Creating a Group Set
Sets of groups can also be created via Create Group Set.
- To create a group set, hover over Create Group Set and from the drop down menu click on the desired enrolment way either Manual Enroll or Self-Enroll or Random Enroll.
Random Enroll automatically allocates students into different groups depending on the group settings, e.g. 4 members in a group.
- For Random Enroll, click on Random Enroll from the Create Group Set drop down menu

The following 3 steps are the same as for Manual Enrolment and Self-Enrolment
- Type the name for the group and a description for it in the appropriate fields
- Select the tools you want to be available to the group
- Tick or untick the personalisation box as necessary
Then,
- Select the relevant options to determine how the groups will be created
- Click the Submit button.

- The groups should now be listed under Groups and you should see a message of successful creation of the group set.

- Click on the group links to open them and see their elements including the names of students automatically added to the groups from the list of students enrolled on the course.
