Spreading the word of research: writing for publication & informing curriculum planning

Dr. Victoria Carpenter is a Reader in Latin American Studies in the Faculty of Business, Computing and Law. She specialises in XX-century Latin American literature and has published extensively in this field. Her recent publications include collected volumes A World in Words, A Life in Texts: Revisiting Latin American Cultural Heritage, (Re)Collecting the Past: History and Collective Memory in Latin American Narrative, A World Torn Apart: Representations of Violence in Latin American Narrative; and a number of articles on modern Latin American literature. Victoria Carpenter has presented papers at over fifteen international conferences. She is the editor of the XX-century Latin American literature section in the Year's Work of Modern Language Studies journal. She is a peer reviewer for ten international journals on Latin American studies.

Session Outline

This session will examine the process of preparing research results for publication. First, we will talk about why and how a research project should be publicised. We will consider different stages of a research project and what publications they may yield. We will discuss how to formulate a publishing plan, how to select publishing venues, and how to write up a publishable paper. We will also talk about the process of peer review.

Follow up sessions

There are a number of sessions that link to this presentation within the semester 2 Academic Practice Programme. These include a session on 'Research Informed Teaching' and two sessions exploring online aspects of research and its dissemination.
