You're our number one priority
Derby is for people who want to actually do things. You'll not only find out about laws, how to apply them and how to work effectively in them, but there's a fair probability you'll be using them for real before the end of your course.
This means you need to build up your confidence, skills and resourcefulness. It's this personal development that is the real benefit of studying at Derby.
We treat you as an individual. It's why studying at Derby is so unique.
What does all this mean?
- Our approach is entirely focused around you. From what we research, to how the timetables are arranged.
- All classes and marking are conducted by experienced professionals, not graduate students.
- You won't find yourself in a second lecture room watching a lecture on video or video-link or having it read to you by a lecturing assistant.
- We pride ourselves on actually knowing you, not just your name, but how you are doing and what your hopes and aspirations are.
- You'll be made to work hard for your degree at Derby from day one. We don't just hand out high marks to anyone who is good at exams; you need to show that you can write, reason, argue, advocate, negotiate and research.
- Derby teaching is personal teaching. On the LL.B, every first year student has an individual meeting with his or her personal tutor at least once a fortnight. A similar programme supports the learning of our other law and criminology students.
- The effectiveness of our teaching is shown by the numerous barristers, solicitors, government lawyers, businessmen, civil servants and advice workers who have graduated and who now make a real difference.
