Dr Antonios Platsas - active member of our Law in Society Research Group

A thriving research community

The Law in Society Research Group encompasses various areas of legal and criminological research which deal with the establishment of law, the application and upholding of the relevant legal principles within the context of justice, society and commerce as well as the development of law in the future.

The Group continues to flourish both in terms of the increase in active researchers and the breadth of areas examined. This has led to a growth in the number of publications and conference presentations undertaken by members of the Group.

For example, Dr Antonios Platsas' research examining comparative law has led him to present at several international conferences across the globe, as well as being published in prestigious journals.

Dr David Walsh, whose research examines the interviewing of suspects, has presented at very high profile international conferences and published prolifically over the past year. He presented at the International Interviewing Research Group in Dundee in June 2011. David is a member of the Law in Society Research Group's executive committee, where his responsibilities lie in providing Group members across the world with details of the recent research in this area.

Jamie Grace, a University Promising Researcher in 2010, continues to gain a growing reputation for quality research and is now publishing in peer reviewed journals and has attended several international conferences.

The Group has recently been augmented by the recruitment of new staff including Dr Sam King, who is currently authoring a book on the subject of enabling offenders to desist from crime, while Sarah Pemberton is undertaking doctoral research in the area of examining the motivations of rapists. Helen Clarke continues to examine the area of sexual violence, which was the focus of her recently competed doctoral studies.

Other researchers embarking on doctoral research include Karen Clubb and Jo Drummond-Child, whose areas of research concern criminal law and cybercrime respectively. Finally, Dr. Husam Botosh cements his growing reputation by publishing on matters of law pertaining to countries in the Middle East.

The group hold regular seminars throughout the year, all of which are free and open to anyone.
