Nichola Forrest - Criminology

Nichola Forrest

Nichola Forrest

Having a family and being a mature student meant that Derby suited me due to its location of where I live. I was able to juggle my family commitments and my studies and the staff have been 100% committed to supporting me.

Nichola won The Mick Miller Memorial Award for Outstanding Criminology Student of the Year, and the Vice-Chancellor's Prizes for Academic Excellence for Best Undergraduate Performance in BCL and Across the University in 2009.

Winning the awards

I'm amazed to have won these awards! To achieve a first classification, then the Mick Miller Award and now the two awards from the Vice Chancellor - one of which says my performance was the best across the university still hasn't really sunk in! To think I've achieved such great accolades is truly amazing.

Why Derby?

Having a family and being a mature student meant that Derby suited me due to its location of where I live. I was able to juggle my family commitments and my studies and the staff have been 100% committed to supporting me.

Practical skills

The modules in Justice and Diversity and Human Rights and Civil Liberties are particularly useful for the role I'm currently working in and studying the course has really improved my all-round academic abilities and my confidence. Also the modules that helped me to understand what sort of team member I am and how to engage in a team should all help me within my new post for the Royal Derby Hospital.

My advice

Even if you are only considering it - pop along to one of the open days - talk to students currently doing the Criminology course and meet the staff who will be teaching you.  Who knows - it could be you winning the Mick Miller Memorial Award in a few years time!
