Miriam Katche - LLM (International and Comparative Law)
Miriam is studying the LLM (International and Comparative Law)
The LLM for me
I had always wanted to study a masters at some point after my degree. I was faced with a difficult decision of either doing it before the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or after the LPC. Eventually, I decided to do it before proceeding with the professional course.
I believe that the masters programme will help improve my knowledge and skills that will be very useful not only in law, but in other areas should I choose to pursue a different career. The LLM provides me with an opportunity to study and specialise in an area of law I am interested in.
An intellectual environment
The work on the course so far has been very educative and interesting. I have had the opportunity to study modules such as International Banking and Finance Law, Public International Law and Legal Scholarship. I have been able to understand the way banks are regulated internationally and why they should be regulated. I've also had the opportunity to understand the civil and common law systems.
The LLM is flexible so you can fit your studies and modules around your area of interest. The help, support and teaching provided by the staff is invaluable. You get to meet a lot of new people with interesting backgrounds, which makes the experience rich and exciting because you get the chance to learn and share experiences. Derby also creates an intellectual yet friendly environment. In Derby you feel at home.
An exciting place to be
Studying is made even more exciting by the very friendly, approachable and supportive nature of the staff. They are always prepared to answer questions and provide advice as well as material that helps the studying process. Meeting new people from around the world, studying in a friendly environment and having the opportunity to centre my studies around modules that interest me have been my highs so far studying the LLM.
Putting knowledge into practice
I currently volunteer with various organisations within Leicester seeking to encourage community cohesion. This helps me put my knowledge into practise and as a result, I am now in a better position to and have the confidence and knowledge to advocate for victims on their behalf.
