I feel very honoured that the lecturers felt that I deserved this award and I feel really proud of myself for not only completing the degree and getting a first, but also whilst working and bringing up a family.

Michelle won The Michael Gilmartin Memorial Award for Enthusiasm & Engagement for 2009.  She studied LL.B (Hons).

Winning the award

I feel very honoured that the lecturers felt that I deserved this award and I feel really proud of myself for not only completing the degree and getting a first, but also whilst working and bringing up a family.

Why Derby?

I've always been interested in Law and felt that the time was right for me to do the degree. I attended the short law course in the summer of 2005 and started the full degree in September 2005 on a part time basis. I was working part time as well as looking after my daughter so the flexibility of being able to study part time fitted in with my lifestyle. The lecturers are so friendly and approachable and they made the course really enjoyable.

A solid foundation for my career

I now work for Bilton Hammond Solicitors in Chesterfield as a secretary / case worker within the Family Law Department. I think my studies at Derby helped me get the job as it gave me more confidence, and the practical skills I learned - especially in the Skills 2 Module - have been really useful. I'd like to carry on with my studies and complete my LPC, get a training contract and become a qualified solicitor.

My advice

I'd recommend studying Law at Derby, not only for the locality of the University but for the quality of the lectures. They have made my experience at Derby really enjoyable and for that I will always be thankful.
