Why Derby was the place for me

I have always wanted a career in the criminal justice system, specifically the Police. My first taste of the course was on an open day, it was immediately obvious that this course had it all. Enthusiastic lecturers, a broad selection of equally interesting pathways tailored to specific careers including probation, work with young offenders, and an investigation pathway for the Police, all wrapped up in a 'hands on' pragmatist approach to the course. Derby was definitely the place for me.

A course that prepares me for the real world

I've developed my transferable skills that will not only give me a theoretical knowledge of the field, but also practical experience. We are taught by professionals who have had years of experience and successful long careers in the criminal justice sectors.

The Criminal Psychology module has been especially interesting covering elements such as the psychology of terrorists, hostage negotiation, and the development of psychological explanations of criminal behavior through the ages.

Enthusiastic staff

The lecturers have been extremely helpful and supportive in not only the lectures and self-directed study, but also in extra-curricular activities. They show a genuine enthusiasm and enjoyment for teaching us, and the open-door policy they implement was a real selling point back when I was deciding which university to go to.

They are always there to talk to about anything course related or things outside the course and if you have a problem you can bet that they'll do everything they can to help you out. You really do get the feeling that their priorities lie with the student's success and wellbeing.

A fantastic place to study

I've made many friends both on my course and outside of it. The university atmosphere is fantastic, it's brilliant being on a course with so many like-minded people who share the same enthusiasm as I do for careers in the criminal justice sector. I had a gut feeling Derby was the place for me, something I didn't feel when visiting other universities. Derby has not disappointed.

My career

I've recently completed my Police Specials training and I'm now a Special Constable with the Derbyshire Police while studying. It is my intention to go into the police once I finish my degree. So I now get 'on-the-job' experience at the same time as studying, and my course teaches me the skills and knowledge I need to do my job.
