About the course

The Law Joint Honours degree, as part of the Joint Honours Scheme, allows you to combine your study of Law in combination with one or two other subjects.  Popular combinations are Law and Criminology, Law and Psychology, or all three!

There is a wide range of exciting and interesting law options for you to choose from depending on your interest in either private or public law, allowing you flexibility in selecting options which compliment the other subjects you will study alongside Law.

For example, if you are studying Law and Criminology you may wish to study choose Criminal Law, Law of Evidence and Police Powers and the Law, for those with and interest in crime. If you're studying Law and Business you may wish to select Contract Law, Commercial Law, Consumer Law, or Corporate Law.  You also have the invaluable opportunity of developing your particular interests by studying a subject of your choice in more depth as part of your Independent Studies in your final year.

Your career

A Joint Honours degree in Law offers you the unique opportunity to develop a mix of skills, by combining your study of law with other subjects, making you an attractive prospect for future employers. It is a valuable degree and offers you the opportunity to study law with intellectual rigour, even if you don't want to become a legal practitioner. You will find that it still provides a stepping-stone to many other careers requiring legal knowledge, for example, Local Government, Criminal Justice Agencies, Crown Prosecution Service, charitable and Voluntary Sector organisations.

Your degree can also provide the opportunity for further postgraduate study in Law at Masters level. We offer an exciting and successful portfolio of LLMs if you wish to further develop your legal studies.

How you'll learn

As a Derby student you'll enjoy a variety of methods of teaching and learning, embracing formal lectures, problem-solving tutorials, seminar discussion groups, computer assisted learning, group work and practical activities to develop skills such as interviewing, negotiation, and oral presentation. 

The University is unique in having a full-sized courtroom built to the specifications laid down by the Lord Chancellor's Department (now Department for Constitutional Affairs).  This functions as a lecture theatre, but is used for moots and practical skills training.  We also have a newly completed family court.

How you're assessed

You'll be assessed through group work, oral presentation, coursework, to enable them to develop and demonstrate their legal knowledge and skills most effectively.

At Derby we are constantly striving to create new and exciting opportunities for the study of law, particularly at postgraduate level.  Derby has some unique and exciting masters programmes, so once you have graduated you can continue to study this fascinating subject.

This is a classroom based subject.

UK/EU students

Full time:

  • If you combine this subject with another classroom based subject or a resource intensive subject it will cost £6,995 per year.
  • If you combine this subject with a specialist subject it will cost £7,495 per year.

Part time:

You usually take 18 of these modules in total for your course

  • Modules from classroom based subjects will cost £875 per module.
  • Modules from resource intensive subjects will cost £935 per module.
  • Modules from specialist subjects will cost £1,000 per module.

International students

Full time:

  • If you combine this subject with another classroom based subject or a resource intensive subject it will cost £9,700 per year.
  • If you combine this subject with a specialist subject it will cost £9,975 per year.
