Kaylie Churchill - Law and English (Joint Honours)
Kaylie is currently studying a Joint Honours degree in Law and English.
Why I wanted to study
I thought getting the degree would open up my eyes to the world and help me have a more in depth view and opinion, and I can confidently say it has. The depth and variety of content in both subjects was beyond what I thought it would be. I found the teaching to be interesting and engaging, which made my enthusiasm and passion for the subjects grow.
Knowledgeable and passionate lecturers
The lecturers are knowledgeable, passionate, approachable and supportive. They're great at providing constructive feedback and advice on assignments to help you improve for the future. The staff want you to succeed at Derby. They don't hold your hand, but they do equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
A great place to study
Derby is a great place to meet new people and gain a wider perspective on life. It's great mixing with other students with different views and opinions who are from different cultural backgrounds. The facilities are great. There are two fully fitted courtrooms, which give you a real understanding and experience of what practising law is like. There is also always something going on in the main atrium such as market stalls and exhibitions.
My future
The teaching, content and style of the course has inspired me to want to teach the subject. When I graduate, I hope to start a postgraduate teaching course at Derby with the view of eventually teaching law.
A university that really listens
During my time at Derby I've had the opportunity to be a programme representative, this allowed me to act on behalf of my peers providing feedback to staff. This is great, as I know what I say will be acted upon. You really get a sense that the University value your opinion and feedback and will act upon it.
I would recommend Law at Derby
I would definitely recommend studying Law at Derby. There's so many reasons why, but to sum it up having had the experience, I would not change it for the world. The feel of the place is amazing and the work and the lecturers are interesting.
