Katerina Georgiadou - LLM Commercial Law

Katernia Georgiadou

Katerina Georgiadou studied both LL.B and LLM Commercial Law here at Derby, and has now gone on to study Her PhD with us.

Through my LLM experience I've gained a broad knowledge not only in law but in other fields as well which was very beneficial for my work. I've absolutely got what I wanted from the course and it's made me more motivated to pursue a higher level of education.

Katerina Georgiadou is 23 and from Cyprus. She's studied her LL.B at Derby and then went on to complete the LLM Commercial Law. She's now working on her PhD.

I've completed both my degrees at Derby University and I'm currently working on my PhD studies. My desire to study law is firmly rooted in the fact the subject of law fascinates me so extensively. I'm intrigued by developments in law, and the way it adapts to an ever-changing society.

I took the final decision to study law when I realised that I would be suited to a law degree as I am at my best when challenged, relish the opportunity of lateral thinking and enjoy the microcosm of human relations.

Why I chose the LLM

My long term goal is to be a law lecturer. So, when I finished my LLB I decided to continue my studies at Derby on the LLM in Commercial Law. The LLM was varied and interesting. I was able to enrich my law knowledge as well as choosing economics and business related modules.

The modules I studied were:

  • Commercial Theories - a fascinating module which involved both law and economics.
  • International Business - this was really useful as I gained significant business knowledge as well as legal knowledge.
  • Law of International Trade - this is really interesting as it combines a variety of subjects including environmental issues, poverty, the necessity of education in developing countries, and emphasises the importance of organizations like the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
  • National and International Sale of Goods - a pure commercial law module, and one of my favourites!
  • Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights - largely involved with patents.
  • Electronic Commercial Law - this is absolutely essential for a continuously evolving technological world. It concentrates on the implications of internet related law.
  • Information Law - this module enlightens and explains the significance of intellectual property rights.
  • Legal Research Methods - one of the compulsory modules. It has definitely helped me develop my research and writing skills.

Student life

The lecturers are very approachable and add a touch of humour to an interesting course.

I've combined studying with making new friends and experiencing student life in Derby. I'm an international student and it was a big step for me to leave my country, my family, my home and my friends and I was naturally feeling a bit scared.  However, when I arrived in Derby I soon realised I wasn't scared any more!

Derby is a small and safe city. It's a perfect place to study.

The University's International Office has been very supportive, not only in providing help, but also in treating me as an individual and not just another student.

What's most rewarding

What is rewarding is that the course is very practical and teaches you skills which you can practice later on in your career. The LLM draws its students from varied backgrounds, including non-lawyers, but there's considerable scope for in-depth legal analysis. Non-lawyers very quickly become familiar with the idiosyncrasies of law.

The tutors are incredibly inspiring and display considerable enthusiasm for their subjects, whilst pushing you to achieve your best.

Through my LLM experience I've gained a broad knowledge not only in law but in other fields as well which was very beneficial for my work. I've absolutely got what I wanted from the course and it's made me more motivated to pursue a higher level of education.

Would I recommend Derby?

Definitely. That's the reason why, after completing my LLB and LLM degrees here, I've decided to continue with my PhD here.
