Applied Criminal Justice Project
What I've gained from the Applied Criminology Project module is far more than can be put in to words!
”Rob Dalton
The Applied Criminal Justice Project is taken by second year students on BA (Hons) Applied Criminology
It does what it says - applies what you learn to the real world of criminal justice, working with local agencies.
What our students say
Rob Dalton took module. He says "to start the project our group held meetings with a member of Derbyshire Police, John Coxhead, who supervised our project through the early stages, and a member of the Criminal Justice Board who endorsed our project.
Our project was specific to the area of youth justice. We aimed to evaluate a DVD resource designed to target young people and bring their attention to the escalating problem of street robbery.
Derby robbery squad, Everest, one of the driving forces behind the DVD production, were concerned that young people were being drawn in to a crime that has severe consequences.
We aimed to generate group discussion amongst young people to get their views on the DVD which is intended to be part of a larger learning package.
During and after the viewing
We surveyed pupils prior to their viewing the DVD which allowed us to establish specific areas of concern to young people. After they had seen the DVD we conducted a focus group and explored the issues raised in the questionnaire in more depth.
From this a series of recommendations were made and presented to the Criminal Justice board and to Derbyshire Police.
Benefits to me
Undertaking this project module was extremely challenging and time consuming, but there's so much to be gained. Working in a group has developed my group work skills which will undoubtedly be required in any career. It's also developed my communication skills as I've been working with both my group and with professional agencies.
I can now apply what I've been taught in previous modules to a real project."
