Claire Read - LL.B
Claire is studying the LL.B (Hons) and recently spent her summer at the prestigious CSET Summer School.
My first year at Derby
I've really enjoyed my first year at Derby, the topics I have studied have been interesting and the support and atmosphere in the School of Law and Criminology has been brilliant.
My favourite part of the course has definitely been the practical elements, such as mooting. I've loved having lectures in the court room, it really helps you to get used to the surroundings you will work in as a Solicitor or Barrister.
I have made a lot of new friends by joining the Law Society. They organise social events and trips throughout the year, which encourages students to get to know each other and work together.
Informed by industry
My studies are informed by industry, as the majority of my lecturers have practiced law or still practice and bring together their expertise and experiences to the classroom. This experience is invaluable as it informs what we learn to ensure we get the most out of the course.
CSET Summer School
I was accepted onto the CSET Summer School which is based down in London and is sponsored by some of the top law firms in the country. It involved skills based workshops to help us improve our legal skills and gave me the opportunity to network with large companies.
I was advised by my lecturers to apply, as it would be a good opportunity and previous Derby students have been really successful and benefited from the experience of the school.
To get the place I first had to fill out an online application followed by a verbal reasoning test. I was then shortlisted for a telephone interview. Having successfully got through all these stages I was offered a place on the summer school.
The summer school was beneficial for my studies as I had the opportunity to develop my skills, such as debating and advocacy with the guidance and support from practicing lawyers. It also boosted my confidence around new people and helped me with my CV writing and my ability to "sell myself" to prospective employers.
