Changing people's lives for the better
You can learn about the reality of law while making a difference to people's lives on the Law Clinic module.
We work with the Citizens Advice and Law Centre, Derby and Immigration and Advice Service, Derby. You'll carry live case-loads and use skills developed in the previous year's Skills module to interview clients, negotiate and draft on their behalf and, where appropriate, to advocate their causes.
In 2009 we were Highly Commended in the Attorney General's Award for our pro bono work in this area.
What makes us unique?
The Derby approach is unique amongst undergraduate law programmes in that we place you within actual advice agencies, rather than supervising a case-load within the University. You work with real caseloads in genuine professional environments and take on the responsibilities of seeing cases through under professional and academic supervision.
The Law Clinic is not just about education, it is also about contributing to change and social justice in the community. Our "outstanding contribution" to pro bono work (work for the public good) has been recognised and acclaimed nationally by the Law Society and by the Attorney General, amongst others.
What does it involve?
You're placed within the partner agencies providing advice and legal services in the areas of Immigration, Employment, Welfare Benefits, Housing, Homelessness and Debt, while at the same time gaining invaluable legal and practical experience.
- You will mentor other volunteers, including other undergraduate or postgraduate law students from other institutions.
- You may introduce or improve support systems at your host agencies.
- You will provide support for research at all the agencies.
- Most importantly, you provide support for clients and legal representatives at Tribunals and hearings.
What our students say
"My whole experience at the Law Centre has been incredible adn will benefit my future as a lawyer."
"I can truly say that my confidence has grown immensely and my legal skills have improved."
