I believe without such flexibility in times I really needed it and extra help and encouragement from my lecturers I might not be where I am today - about to embark on a course to qualify as a Barrister.

Jeanette studied LL.B (Hons) with Criminology and will graduate in January 2012.

A great opportunity

Derby gave me the opportunity to do the degree for free through the Degrees of Success competition run in partnership with The Derby Telegraph. I had an interview with Vice Chancellor and the editor of the paper. The panel were very happy with my enthusiasm to study the course and I was awarded a £10,000 scholarship.

The benefits of the course

I took a range of modules including Property, Tort, Equity and Trusts and Contract Law as well as criminology modules. I found them very interesting and rewarding. I had the chance to do several weeks of work experience at a local solicitors and the Citizens Advice Bureau. I have also had experience with the CPS and East Midlands Barristers Chambers including 3 weeks shadowing a QC in a murder trail that recieved nationwide press.

The future

I recieved the Lord Diplock Scholarship to the value of £8000 from the Inns of Court Middle Temple for the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). I had to write a written application and have an interview in London in front of two senior Barristers and a QC. Being a Derby student meant I had hands on advice on how to tackle such an important interview. The lecturers were also more than happy to provide excellent references.

Highly recommended

I would recommend the University of Derby to other students, due to the excellent encouragement I have received in my time there. I believe without such flexibility in times I really needed it and extra help and encouragement from my lecturers I might not be where I am today - about to embark on a course to qualify as a Barrister.
