Laura Williams has graduated in Joint Honours Creative Writing and Media Writing. She was part of the University of Derby Entrepreneur Competition. She was a great contributor to the competition and you can see her contestant profile and watch all the videos online.
Laura is the creator of an exciting project called What We Wrote.
We asked Laura a few questions about her experience of Derby so far:
» What have you enjoyed most about the course?
"I have enjoyed the fact that you get the opportunity to work with real published writers in a real environment. This is great as you can get a professional to look over the drafts which enables you to be the best that you can be."
I have really enjoyed the Writers Reading module which was a break down of the work of famous writers and unknown authors. It was truly interesting and inspirational to discover the techniques used by other authors.
I loved doing the coursework as I believe redrafting and drafting again is the best way to learn and develop your writing and it reflects improvement. Also this way you get to play with loads of ideas and see which ones work and which ones don't so much, the focus really is on development.
I enjoyed the course in its entirety to be honest, mostly because it developed me as a writer and I feel the course has equipped me with the tools to become and make a living out of being a published writer.
» What can you say about the facilities?
The Voicebox in Derby was used by the lecturers and students to perform during the Storytelling module. This was great to see the lecturer do what they are teaching you to do and I really appreciated taking direction from them, it really deepened my understanding of the subject.
» How have you found the lecturers and the support they have given you?
"The lecturers are generally fantastic and are always available to talk to if you need them."
» What would you say to someone thinking of coming here to Derby?
"My experience at Derby has opened so many doors of opportunity for me."
There is a great cross section of society so you can really embrace diversity and it reflects the real life environment and you get great experience with dealing with a widespread variety of people.
The entrepreneur competition was fantastic and it opened many doors for me. It was a real valuable experience that has enabled me to get business grants amongst other things.
