Combined Studies Programme

What is the Combined Studies Programme?

It's a degree, designed to adapt to your needs and interests.

You can pick different sections from a range of subjects and it'll lead to a BA or BSc Honours degree.

Whichever combination you opt for, the depth of study will be the same - it's only the number of modules that's different.

Who is it designed for?

  • Students who are seeking a programme of study that is highly flexible in terms of curricular content, and through which they can receive a broad educational experience at degree level.
  • Students who are not ready to commit to a particular subject at the outset and wish to explore different disciplines before making a commitment (and then transferring to the appropriate programme).
  • Students who wish to study for a degree in the evenings and are unable to access the range of modules necessary to satisfy the requirements of a named degree programme.
  • Students who initially embarked on a specialist or combined subject programme who have found the course specific requirements too restrictive and are, therefore, seeking a programme with a more open structure.

You'll achieve the same quantity and depth of learning as every other student but there are very few other restrictions. You can select modules from those available in a wide range of different subjects and programmes, throughout the University. Your programme of study will be largely self managed and at any time you can switch to any named degree programme for which you are qualified.

If I complete on the CSP, what will be the title of my degree?

Degree awards achieved through the CSP are conferred in recognition of attainment of the University general credit requirements for an award. Titles are not linked to any particular programme or subject, reflecting the fact that students have not focused on any particular named subject.

The titles are, therefore:

Bachelor of Arts with Honours or Bachelor of Science with Honours (BA or BSc being determined by the number of modules taken from BA or BSc programmes).

How long does it take and what are the requirements?

In accordance with the general requirements for degree programmes at the University, you're required to complete the equivalent of 8 standard modules in each phase. For full time students, the formal duration is three years. Part time students typically take 6 years to complete. However, as flexibility is a key element of the Programme, students may manage the pace of study to fit in with their life circumstances and may complete in a period not exceeding 8 years. The structure is very simple:

  • In Stage 1 (Year 1) you select eight modules.
  • In Stage 2 (Year 2) you select eight modules.
  • In Stage 3 (Year 3 ) you select six modules and either an Independent Study or two additional modules.

Is there any special guidance system for CSP students?

Yes. All students who enrol, full time, to begin their studies on the CSP will be allocated a personal tutor from the experienced team of Academic Counsellors. This is to ensure that CSP students can maximise the opportunities available to them. In addition, a Senior Academic Counsellor has overall responsibility for students on the CSP and works closely with students registered as part time.

What are the entry requirements?

All applicants are interviewed and we try to make places available to all students for whom the CSP is appropriate and who satisfy the University entry requirements for a degree programme. For further information, contact the Admissions Office on 01332 591051.
