Getting your student visa
The regulations for obtaining a student visa change from time to time
So make sure you contact your nearest British Diplomatic Post for advice.
Here is a summary of the current regulations:
- There are several types of student visa - you must apply for the one that's relevant to you.
- The length of time you can stay in the UK depends on the type of course you're studying.
- You need 40 points to apply for a student visa.
- The institution where you choose to study must hold a Tier 4 sponsor license (PDF) - we have one of these.
- The course you choose to study must lead to an approved qualification.
- You will need to have enough money to cover your course fees and your monthly living costs.
- You need a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies to apply for your student visa.
To get one you must show that you satisfy the entry requirements for your course by sending us your academic qualifications including transcripts, proof of your English language skills, your references, a deposit towards your course fees, and a copy of your passport. We will then send you your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies.
If your application for a UK student visa is rejected we will give you a full refund of your deposit, after we've seen a copy of your rejection letter from the entry clearance officer.
- The cost of your student visa depends where you apply from.
- If you are applying for your student visa from inside the UK, you need to complete a Tier 4 (general) application form. Make sure you read the guidance notes first.
- If you're applying for your student visa from outside the UK, you need to complete the correct application form on the official British Government website for visa services.
- If your course lasts for six months or less you can apply for a Student Visitor visa.
- Submit your application by post or in person at a Public Enquiry Office.
