My name is Manpreet Singh and I'm from India

Manpreet Singh

I studied afor a computing degree in the School of Computing.

The University of Derby has completely lived up to my expectations

I have thoroughly enjoyed studying here under the supervision of helpful and knowledgeable staff.

I was very fortunate to work for Rolls-Royce PLC for my year long industrial placement, which would never have been achievable without the encouragement and support of the dedicated staff at Derby.

I experienced a good balance of examination and coursework assessments in my course

My course was informative, interesting and an excellent blend of computing and business management techniques, which is a rare phenomena.

During my course, I got the opportunity of work on interesting projects including designing a website for Derby County and take part in Microsoft’s Imagine Cup competition.

The international student adviser helped me on a number of occasions

He helped me with issues such as student visa extension, confirmation letters for bank accounts and travelling purposes.

I came across many friendly and helpful people

It was not difficult for me to find a privately rented accommodation which I shared with other students. But my advice to international students would be to make necessary accommodation arrangements before landing in the UK.

The nightlife is great with many attractions in the newly reformed city centre.

It is useful to have one of the UK's favourite theme parks, Alton Towers only 40 minutes away from Derby which is great to visit in summer holidays.

In my spare time I would go shopping or touring the new Westfield shopping centre in Derby.

The UK has a huge presence of people from various cultures and societies

This made it possible for me to not hugely change my way of living.

I also got involved in celebrations of many festivals originating from India such as Diwali, Holi and Vaisakhi at the religious and community centres based in Derby itself.

I would highly recommend Derby to international students

Being a fairly small and peaceful city, Derby causes fewer distractions for students which is useful especially during examinations.
