Visa conditions
If you have any questions about your visa during your studies
Contact the International Student Advisor (Immigration and Visas) at visa@derby.ac.uk.
If you're entering the UK on a Tier 4 visa, you must understand the conditions attached to it. It's very important that you follow these conditions as failure to do so could lead to your visa being cancelled and you having to return home.
Your responsibilities as a student
You must:
- register for your course on time each academic year
- attend classes and contact your tutors if you're going to be absent (eg sickness)
- follow the University's regulations
- contact us immediately if you change your status (eg deferring or withdrawing from your studies)
- give the University a copy of your passport and visa/biometric residence permit
- make sure we have your contact details (and let us know if they change)
The University must report to the UK Border Agency any changes which may seriously affect your studies. So, you must tell us if you are having any issues.
Working while studying
Your visa will state how many hours you can work each week.
If you're here on a Student Visitor Visa you can't work at all.
As a student at the University, you can work while on a Tier 4 visa, but there are restrictions on the number of hours you're allowed to work each week:
- If you're studying at degree level or above you can work up to 20 hours each week.
- If you're studying below degree level (eg the International Foundation Programme or English for Academic Purposes) you can work up to 10 hours each week
All Tier 4 students can work full time during the University's official holidays. If you have a work placement as part of your course can work full time hours on the placement.

Registering with the police
Some students must register with the local police (your visa should say whether you need to do this). Please see registering with the police.
