Mikaela Balder
I am responsible for representing the Devonshire campus in Buxton within the International Student Centre (ISC), which means that I ensure the well-being of our international/EU student cohort throughout their time studying at the University of Derby.
What I can help with
- Provide appropriate, effective and confidential advice, support, guidance, and information services on ie adjusting to life in the University and in Buxton, the British culture or how to explore the Derbyshire area.
- Basic Visa and Immigration advice.
- International student 'Meet and Greet'.
- Social options including game nights, trips, 'mingles' and cultural discoveries whilst studying in Buxton.
- Language development and study skills support.
- Integration with the local community in Buxton.
My background
I first moved to Buxton in September 2007 when I started my BA (Hons) in Events Management - shortly thereafter I had founded the first International Student Society on campus and managed to recruit 42 members from 16 different nationalities. This led me on to my role as Events and Marketing Assistant in the Marketing department where I helped to organise open days and took part in the student ambassador work. Whilst studying I continued to volunteer within the Students' Union and was appointed International Students' Representative in Buxton 2008 - 2010.
