Why choose Derby?
The University of Derby is a modern university
Our popularity increases year on year, as do the levels of student satisfaction and attainment. We're ranked in the top three of all modern universities for international student satisfaction.
Our main campus is in the city of Derby and is easy to get to by road, rail and air. We currently have nearly 1,700 international students studying with us from over 100 countries.
We offer a supportive learning environment, providing personal attention to students and deliver learning with a personal touch. We’re a small university and our students really like this. It means they make friends really easily, and their tutors and lecturers get to know them individually. Over 85% of our classes have fewer than 30 students and you have access to your own personal tutor who you can arrange to see whenever you need to - someone who will take an interest in your progress and success.
We have a wide range of courses that you can study and offer traditional postgraduate and undergraduate alongside pre-sessional English and progression courses designed specifically for the international market. You can study full time, part time or, for about 30 of our courses, online. Wherever possible, our courses will be accredited or endorsed by relevant professional bodies.
Employability and careers
Employability is at the heart of what the University of Derby aims to help its international students with, and as a University of Derby graduate you will secure a competitive advantage in the job market.
We have been voted in the top three UK universities for employability, lecture quality and learning technology in the International Student Barometer.
A dedicated International Student Centre
We pride ourselves on being friendlier and more supportive than other universities and our International Student Centre has been voted 'The best in the country' by other international students studying in the UK*
Our dedicated International Student Centre provides support, advice and guidance from the moment you start thinking about which course to choose, right through to your graduation – for help or advice, just ask. We can support with developing English language skills and also advise you about working in the UK.
Excellent facilities and real world learning at Derby
We’ve spent over £100 million on facilities at our Derby and Buxton campuses over the last few years, to make sure that you have the best learning, teaching and student experience. These include a simulated hospital and working radiography suite, industry standard kitchens and fine dining restaurant, computer games suites, a commercial spa and salon, a law court, a sports science gym, a theatre and a 58-acre outdoor pursuits centre.

Two safe campuses
Derby is a bustling city about 30 minutes from Nottingham, an hour from Birmingham and less than two hours from London. Derby is a city that's going places, with a £2 billion plan of redevelopment currently underway.
Buxton is a picturesque small town on the edge of the Peak District National Park, about an hour from Derby and Manchester.
Both of our campuses are accessible by road, rail and air.
We want you to feel at home during your stay at Derby. We guarantee that accommodation will be reserved for you for at least the first year of your studies.
Helping you to settle in
Our welcome programme for international students takes place a week before the UK students arrive. You can take part in social and cultural activities, such as a visit to Derby or a tour of our Multi-Faith Centre. During the week you will receive lots of useful information, make new friends, start to find your way around and, most importantly, get answers to all your questions. You can even join us on free trips to London and other local places.
Once you have decided that the University of Derby is the place where you want to study, the application process is simple. We have local agents and contry representatives in Nigeria, China and Pakistan who can all help you with your applications or you can contact one of our international student advisers.
