  • This programme can be combined with Culinary Arts or Events Management, which means that you will study two subject areas, giving you a great range of knowledge and skills for your future career.
  • You have the flexibility to combine this with another subject from the joint honours programme to help increase your job opportunities when you graduate.
  • We have our own fine dining restaurant, which is run by our students, so you will get hands on experience right from the start.
  • We work together with the Swiss Hotel Management School, so you can be sure you will develop the skills that employers are looking for.
  • You will have access to membership of the Educational Membership Scheme of the Institute of Hospitality, formally the HCIMA, giving you great opportunties to network and make industry contacts.

About the course

This programme develops an understanding of the nature of the hospitality environment, with an emphasis on the need to reflect on and question the diverse values and practices that shape the industry today.

We pride ourselves on being able to offer experiential learning which has meant we have a high number of graduates who go straight into employment. This style of learning - gaining experience through our on site restaurants and bistro, connecting with our industry contacts and going on placement is an invaluable way for you to pick up the key skills you need for immediate employment when you graduate.

You will develop a deeper knowledge and understanding by researching into these sectors, applying theories and developing new ideas.

"Buxton is one of the best unis to go to for hospitality." Rhianna Cooper, Hospitality student

"I really enjoy studying Hospitality Management at the Buxton Campus of Derby University, the staff are really friendly, helpful and have always got time for you. Why would you want to look for or study anywhere else?"Lauren Docksey, 3rd year Hospitality Management student

How you'll learn

Fieldtrips

You will get the chance to go on a number of fieldtrips, both locally and abroad, as well as the chance to put your skills into practice at special events.

This year our second year students have enjoyed a trip to the local brewery, learning about the history of beer making, the development processes, and how to run the business.

All students then had the opportunity to go to St. Nazaire in Brittany, and visited a food supplier market in Nantes, had a guided tour of the city, visited chocolatiers, creperies, and vineyards and toured a 5 star hotel.

First year students catered for some Swiss VIP guests, and students from hospitality, catering, and culinary arts courses all worked together to plan and host an end of year fundraising event, raising £800 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Work placements

You will have an opportunity to undertake an optional placement year in the UK or overseas after you've completed stage two. It's an excellent opportunity for you to develop an insight into the hospitality industry, and gives you the chance to put your theory in to practice.

Find out more about placement opportunities on your course.

Previously, our students have undertaken placements in Gleneagles, Crieff hydro, Engineers Country Club (New York) and the Marriot Breadsall Priory.

You'll do two work based modules while you are on placement. Together they make up the Diploma in Professional Practice.

Anything else?

Your course will include PDP and Passport Schemes, these are designed to enhance your employability by giving you the skills that employers are looking for.

PDP helps you to reflect on your learning and plan for your development, making sure you develop the skills you need in the workplace. The Passport Scheme helps you to develop some general skills, and also specific skills to your subject area, so you're ready for work.
