Professor Jim Sampson is an international guidance expert and a Visiting Professor of Career Development & Management at the University of Derby, International Centre for Guidance Studies (iCeGS). Jim is Professor of  Psychological Services in Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at Florida State University and Co-Director for the Center for the Study of Technology in Counseling and Career Development College of Education, Florida State University. He has considerable experience of working with guidance organisations throughout the UK and further afield. He has recently worked in Italy on behalf of iCeGS, undertaking research into ICT skills for Guidance Counsellors. In recent years, Jim has concentrated his UK activities on supporting national careers service organisations, such as Careers Scotland and Northern Ireland Careers & Guidance Services; Connexions Services in the East and West Midlands; and University Careers Advisory Services to design and implement improved career resources and services for young people and adults. He has developed highly innovative methods and materials designed to inform and support staff working in a range of differing guidance settings such as schools, colleges, community centres and higher education institutions.

He also specialises in the design and use of information and communications technology (ICT) in career guidance and counselling. His focus has included designing counselling strategies to help young people and adults make good use of computer applications, creating implementation strategies for the cost-effective use of ICT, and the design of need-based web sites for careers and guidance services. Jim has been awarded several prestigious US national awards for his contribution to enhancing careers research, policy and practice, including the JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Technology in Career Development (2004), and the American Career Development Association Eminent Career Award (2001).
