Teenage Mothers in Nottingham/Nottinghamshire Research
Why is it that some young mothers are in education, employment or training and others are not?
Partners at Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire Futures have commissioned iCeGS to undertake in depth qualitative research with young mothers in the city and the county to explore this question. The project is supported by the East Midlands Improvement and Efficiency Partnership and fieldwork will be concluded by the end of March.
The research builds on significant insight work already undertaken by the Nottingham partners using management information to explore how many young mums there in the city and the county and the areas they live in using Experian classifications. The qualitative work will build on this further to explore the following questions:
- What are the catalysts, drivers and barriers that shape young mothers' decisions to return to work or learning, compared with those that chose not to?
- Who influences those choices?
- Where do young mums get information about their options?
- Have any marketing media got a greater influence on their choices than any others?
The first phase of the research took place in January 2011 where the project was defined and research tools developed. Phase two of the project will take place in February/ March 2011 when the fieldwork will be undertaken interviewing up to 50 young mothers. Young mums will be interviewed face -to -face either individually or in small groups of up to four individuals. A summary report of findings will be available from May 2011.
