Second Wave of Research for STEM Careers Awareness Timelines Project due to start

STEM Careers Awareness Timelines Project

iCeGS in partnership with CEI at the University of Warwick, have been working on the 'STEM Careers Awareness Timelines' project. The three year, national, project focuses on the effectiveness of a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) related initiatives at over 20 participating schools in England.

The first phase of the research took place in 2008-09 during which students completed questionnaires to assess their current interest in STEM subjects and their willingness to engage in STEM careers. Following the first phase of the research, each school received its own report highlighting those areas where students might lack understanding, knowledge or interest in STEM related subjects or careers.  Many schools have since used the reports to plan and develop their provision. The first report from the project was  Hutchinson, J., Stagg, P. and Bentley, K. (2009) STEM Careers Awareness Timelines. Attitudes and Ambitions Towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM at Key Stage 3). Derby: International Centre for Guidance Studies, University of Derby.

The second phase of the research will involve a further attitudinal questionnaire involving year seven and year nine pupils. The questionnaire has been designed and fieldwork is due to commence in July 2010.
School mentors are continuing to meet contacts within schools to develop case studies and best practice vignettes. Regional events have been held for discussion and to aid planning.
