iCeGS project in Sri Lanka
Siobhan Neary, Deputy Head of iCeGS is currently working on a three month project based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The project funded by the Asian Development Bank is part of a wider modernizing education programme aimed at increasing the relevancy of secondary and tertiary education to the labour market to increase the employability of young people.
Sri Lanka has a highly educated youth population but also high levels of unemployment. The unemployment rate for young people is up to eight times more than for adults. A key initiative to address this is the development of a structured approach to the delivery of career guidance and counseling in schools.
As such, this project focuses on developing a careers workforce made up of experienced teachers. They will have responsibility for raising young people's career awareness; particularly around vocational education and training and to ensure young people leave school more work ready.
