Y Touring Evaluation Research
8 January 2013
Y Touring Theatre Company's Theatre of Debate programmes form part of a five-year strategic project funded by the Wellcome Trust.
Theatre of Debate is a concept developed by Y Touring which sees them and their partner's commissioning new plays each year that explore the social and ethical implications of new advances in science. These plays then tour the country going into schools and other community facilities. The theatre company and its funders are keen to ensure that the performances and associated activities continue to provide high-quality learning experiences. Consequently they have asked an evaluation team includes researchers from University of Derby, University of Manchester and Isinglass Consultancy Ltd. to conduct a formative evaluation.
The research team will be looking at the how different aspects of Y Touring's work affect the experience of teachers and students in schools. Last year the performance of Dayglo, which focused on pharmacogenetics was evaluated by the team. This year the play is called 'Stunted Trees and Broken Bridges' and is about neurotechnology.
The evaluation team's work includes surveys with pupils and teachers, and case studies of the impact of the play and debate in schools. This year the study will also include an aspect specifically on the teaching resources developed by Y Touring to accompany the performance. All our researchers who visit schools have full CRB checks which will be available for your inspection. Our research methods will also conform to the principles of ethical research and be approved according to the University of Derby Research Ethics Policy.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about the research then contact the research director Jo Hutchinson (University of Derby) j.hutchinson@derby.ac.uk.
