Royal Holloway is part of the STEM Disability Transition Group which works to improve information, advice and guidance for disabled students wishing to further progress in STEM fields. This conference will communicate the work we have been doing to address the major challenges faced in transitioning within education and to employment.

In partnership with HE STEM, Royal Holloway, University of Greenwich, University of Kingston, Brooklands College, Aim Higher South London, Physiological Society, behr outcomes, Charters School, National Autistic Society.

Background

The STEM DTG Conference in July 2013 will showcase the work done so far by the STEM Disability Transition Group. Our group has a specific interest in the support of post-16 transitions for STEM disabled students and is made up of practitioners from schools, universities and professional bodies.

The group was instigated upon the findings and aspirations of the attendees at the HE STEM supported Accessing STEM: Supporting transition and study for disabled STEM undergraduates Conference held at Royal Holloway on 17th February 2012. At the conference, delegates representing HEIs, FE Colleges and professional bodies expressed a strong desire for continued cross-STEM discussions to be held and a transfer of practice to occur between colleagues/practitioners working in this area.

Guest speakers

Following an introduction from our sister group, the STEM Disability Committee, the conference will officially begin with guest speakers representing the three key transition phases: from school/college to higher education, within higher education and from higher education to employment. Students, disability practitioners and employers will share their experiences of progression from STEM education to employment.
Workshops

Our college and university group members have been collecting data from students regarding their expectations and experiences of STEM study in secondary and higher education. Following the guest speakers, delegates will participate in two of three workshops available to discuss the findings and to explore the implications for employment.
