Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance

Qualifications in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) are now available through the International Centre for Guidance Studies at the University of Derby.

School children learning in the classroom

These qualifications, Certificate in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance, and Advanced Diploma in Managing Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance, have been developed in response to the increasing need for improved CEIAG to support young people with the decisions they make through and beyond the 11-19 phase of their learning. The programmes focus on leading, managing, coordinating and contributing to programmes of careers education, information, advice and guidance, enabling learners to obtain accreditation for work based activities.

How will the qualification benefit my organisation?

These new qualifications will support you and your organisation to evaluate, develop and implement systems and programmes to achieve the national Quality Standards for Young People's IAG. In addition, by studying these awards you will help ensure that your organisation is compliant with recent legislation, in particular the statutory guidance associated with the Education and Skills Act 2008.

Built around the key themes of Management, Curriculum, Information, Guidance and Learner Outcomes, these qualifications will help you in achieving quality awards such as Career Mark.

Who should enrol?

Those with responsibility for leading, managing, coordinating and contributing to CEIAG within their institution may wish to complete a full Certificate or Advanced Diploma programme. The nature of the programme allows for individuals to select one or more modules to obtain an intermediate award, for example a librarian may choose to complete the 'Managing Information' module combined with the 'Introduction to CEIAG' module and achieve a University Certificate of Achievement (30 credits).

Certificate in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance

This  programme of study is aimed at support workers or newly appointed staff with responsibilities or roles linked to the CEIAG agenda. Successful completion of the Certificate, 60 credits at level 4, will provide participants with a University Certificate in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance.

Advanced Diploma in Managing Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance

The Diploma is aimed at more experienced staff or those with management or coordinating roles for CEIAG. Those successfully completing 60 credits at level 6 (undergraduate) will achieve a University Diploma in Managing Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance. Progression is available onto the Masters' of Arts (MA) Education: Guidance Studies for suitable candidates.

What will I study?

The programmes consist of 6 modules. The 'Introducing CEIAG' module is mandatory for all participants; the remainder of the modules are optional and can be selected as appropriate to their responsibilities. Learners are required to complete four modules, usually over a two year period to complete the full award.

Each module is worth 15 credits and equates to 150 hours notional study, however this can include a range of activities such as: training; work-based activities related to projects; self-directed study; research and preparation for assignments. The programme will commence in autumn 2011 and it is envisaged learners will have completed by the summer 2013.  Candidates need 30 credits to obtain a university-validated Certificate of Achievement.

What do the modules cover?

  • Managing or coordinating CEIAG explores the issues and processes supporting the development, delivery and evaluation of CEIAG programmes.
  • Curriculum development explores the development of CEIAG programmes which are integral to the wider personal development agenda.
  • Information management considers the issues and processes involved in the development and delivery of Connexions information systems.
  • Advice and guidance considers the differences between information, advice and guidance and investigates models for the delivery of each and the process of referral.
  • Work-based learning project provides CEIAG practitioners with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to evaluate review and manage change within their work environment. This is only available as part of the Advanced Diploma.

Assessments

There are no exams for these programmes. The assessments may include essays and/or a learning journal but will be primarily linked to work based activities to ensure the programme supports and evidences change and developments in provision for young people.

Where will I study?

A blended approach is used for delivery combining face-to-face taught sessions at central locations in the East Midlands, with web-based materials and resources. Participants will be supported by University of Derby tutors who are experts in CEIAG for young people.

How much will it cost?

Individual modules cost £350 and a full certificate or diploma will cost £1400.
