Religion and Belief in Higher Education: The experiences of staff and students. Stakeholder meeting
16 August 2010
Over the past few decades, the religious composition of the student and staff bodies in English, Welsh and Northern Irish higher education institutions (HEIs) has changed substantially. In addition to its growing diversity, the profile of religion and belief has also changed, becoming more visible and public than was previously the case in many institutions. Recent legislation has determined many approaches and responses to issues raised by an individual's religion and belief however the evidence base on these matters in higher education is not yet extensive
The Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) commissioned iCeGS and The Society, Religion and Belief Research Group at the University of Derby to conduct research which looks to provide a baseline and a model to inform further local evidence-based policy and practice development.
During the first phase of the research, stakeholder meetings were held at the ECU head office on June 4th 2010 and the report summarising the key issues raised during the meetings is now available.
A national survey of staff and students views will take place in the autumn term, alongside 7 case study visits to universities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
