Your own theatre to work in
When we took over ownership of Derby Theatre - a fantastic performance venue in the city - an exciting new era began. Our 'learning theatre' is a place where you'll be able to gain vital work experience in all forms of theatre production and management, from on stage to behind the scenes, box office management and publicity.
Derby Theatre presents major professional productions as well as amateur shows, so you'll get the best hands on experience possible and learn your craft in a unique environment.
Single honours or joint honours?
You can study either BA (Hons) Theatre Arts or Theatre Studies Joint Honours. Public performance is integral to the single honours course, and there is also the opportunity to be involved in much extra-curricular activity at the Theatre. On the Joint Honours course we'll encourage you to explore the relationship between Drama, Theatre and Performance and consider Theatre Studies from many different perspectives.
A learning theatre
Behind the scenes of the main auditorium at Derby Theatre, the Studio Theatre provides excellent rehearsal space as well as being the ideal forum for student productions. Previous performances include A Clockwork Orange, Lady Chatterley's Lover and The Little Shop of Horrors.
You'll also get the chance to take part in main stage productions and an extensive extracurricular programme of performances that takes in festivals, tours, National Trust properties and events, such as the Brasov Festival in Romania and the National Student Drama Festival.
A vibrant environment
You'll be encouraged to consider subject of theatre arts from many different perspectives, while studying acting, directing, theatre in education, playwriting, and technical theatre.
Theatre Arts students performed The Country Child by Derbyshire writer Alison Uttley at Derby Theatre. This classic book about a 19th century rural Derbyshire childhood was brought to the stage using the latest film, video and animation techniques, alongside the live actors.
Literary, music and film events about Alison Uttley were also held at the Studio Theatre to complement the stage production. These included a storytelling session for parents and children and a discussion exploring the literary and cultural history of the Derbyshire landscape
