Explore your interests

Our courses, BA (Hons) Film Studies and BA (Hons) Film and Television Studies, are designed for students whose primary focus is the critical and theoretical study of the moving image, but who also want to have the opportunity to explore related interests in scriptwriting, archiving and work experience.

If you're studying Film and Television Studies (Joint Honours), you could combine it with a more practical media subject like Broadcast Media or Media Writing, to get a good balance of theory and practice.

Exciting opportunities

There are lots of opportunities for you to get real work experience in the creative and cultural industries as part of your course. This will really bring the subject alive and look great on your CV.

Close links with the industry

Some of our lecturers are award winning film makers, enabling them to enhance your understanding of film theory with their first-hand experience of working in the field.  You'll benefit from their broad range of expertise which includes subject areas such as British television drama and the international horror genre.

We also have close ties with Derby Quad - the media centre in the heart of the city - and a number of film festivals, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to make vital contacts.

We also offer opportunities for you to attend guest lectures with professionals from the industry.  Renowned Brit-Horror film Director Steve Sheil presented a special screening of his movie, "Mum and Dad"  followed by a Q&A session with students.
