Theatrical interpretation of Shakespeare's plays
Professional Actor Ben Spiller of the 1623 Theatre Company delivered an interactive seminar on the theatrical interpretation of Shakespeare’s plays.
Ben relayed to the group that a Shakespearean play is not a text but a script, and demonstrated this by getting the group to physically apply the beat of iambic pentameter, whether by a tapping of the foot or clapping of hands to extracts of Hamlet and Macbeth.
The second half of the session focused on the non-verbal communication between script, theatrical production and audience. An extract from Macbeth was used to rate the group’s reaction to the dialogue’s imagery.
This activity introduced to the group how an actor, as a moving art form, adds to the dynamics of a script, especially since Shakespeare underpinned his productions by language, rather than props.
