Globe Theatre, London

Everyone felt the trip to be thoroughly worthwhile and a return visit can't come too soon

Karen Springer

A group of our English students went to the Globe Theatre in London.

On arrival in London they enjoyed a tour of Southwark Cathedral guided by Irene Last, who placed particular emphasis on the church's many literary connexions. The Globe Theatre is tucked amongst the huddle of buildings lining Southwark's Thames-side banks. On foot, you came upon the building all of sudden, rather than seeing it from a distance; this gives an impression of the dense built environment of sixteenth century London.

They were accompanied to their seats in the theatre to see the production King Lear, by actors in Elizabethan costume and on stage they were entertained by musicians and singers to Old English (Anglo-Saxon) songs set to Early Modern music. The finalie was a storm scene which included real thunder and there was also torrential rain and hail stones.
