FAQs
» How much time will I spend in class?
You'll typically be doing four modules each semester. The class time each week is 2-3 hours per module.
» How much time will I spend on preparation?
As a general rule, your preparation time will be equivalent to your attendance (i.e. 2-3 hours per week for each module). However, this will vary.
When coursework is due, you'll obviously need to devote more time to the preparation and writing of the essay.
There will be peaks and troughs throughout the academic year, of course.
» How many books will I need to buy?
This depends on the module - you'll need to buy five or six books for some modules, while others will just use one book for the whole module.
English is a book-based course and you'll need your own copies of books to gain the most from the course. However, we won't ask you to buy a volume of poetry in order to study one poem from it, we do always try to recommend the cheapest edition of a text to the University bookshop. There are also lots of opportunities for you to buy secondhand books at Derby.
» How many people will be on the course with me?
There are usually about 35 students in each year.
However, for some modules, students on the BA (Hons) English and those doing English (Joint Honours) will be taught together, so class sizes do vary.
