The calibre of all these works is outstanding. I believe that this year's long-list is one of the strongest ever seen amongst any international literary prize.

Edward Hogan, who studied a joint honours degree in English and Creative Writing, has been short listed for an international literary award - and could pick up a cheque for £60,000!
Edward, who is a graduate from Derby, is one of six authors from all over the world competing for the Dylan Thomas Prize, which recognises the work of young writers. The nomination was put forward by his publisher, following the publication of his first novel, Blackmoor, which is set in two fictional places based on Derbyshire villages.
"Finding out I was on the list came out of the blue. I was checking my e-mails in my flat when I found out. I'm just absolutely delighted. It's great to be out there and in the public eye because you want more people to see your work." said Edward when he first found out he had been nominated.
It was more than five years before the book was completed and finally published in May 2008 and he is now working on his second novel, also set locally.
The short-list for the prize was announced in September and the awards will be held on November 10.
