Creative Writing
With creative writing at Derby you'll learn through workshops rather than lectures. The workshops involve reading, writing, discussion, debate, drafting and redrafting - activities that you would do as a professional writer.
Combine subjects for a varied degree
If you don't want to specialise only in Creative Writing and want a mix of skills, a joint honours degree could be for you. You can choose to study Creative Writing with one or two other subjects - there are lots to choose from and they can be subjects from completely different areas.
Advice from experienced writers
Our staff are all active creative writers so their advice is very practical. We're writers that teach rather than teachers that write! There will also be workshops and talks delivered by other practising writers, broadcasters and publishers - so you'll be able to quiz them about their experiences, and get valuable advice from them.
Recent speakers include: TV writer Neil McKay, crime writer Cath Staincliff, radio playwright and magazine editor Helen White (better known by her pseudonym Liz Baines), magic lanternist Mervyn Heard, artist Bob Moulder, award wining author Kath McKay, internationally renowned author Chris Nickson, award winning writer James Manlow, writer Greg Heath, and TV writer Steve Wetton.
