School of Humanities
An innovative curriculum
In the School of Humanities you can study a range of courses that allow you to critically engage with culture, society and politics. These subjects encourage you to explore theoretical ideas and concepts, and enable you to put them into practice.
All of our courses are taught by active researchers and practitioners who ensure you'll be inspired and challenged, to gain the most from your studies.
Excellent links and resources
If you're engaged in practical work in film, media and journalism you'll use state of the art equipment, enabling you to produce high quality work. You'll also benefit from our recently refurbushed library that stocks a wide range of books, journals and electronic resources so that you can undertake in-depth research on numerous topics. And if you're studying Theatre Arts, you'll be based in the unique learning environment of Derby Theatre.
We also have well-established relationships with:
- Cultural institutions including Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
- Media institutions such as BBC Radio Derby and the Derby Evening Telegraph.
- Heritage sites such as the Derwent Valley Heritage Corridor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kedleston Hall (a 15 minute walk from the University), Haddon Hall and Chatsworth.
- The publishing industry and practising writers.
- US colleges and universities.
Study Joint Honours and keep your options open
If you don't want to specialise in just one area, want to impress employers with your varied CV, or enjoy two or three subjects equally, a Joint Honours degree could be for you.
Take any of these humanities subjects with one or two others, to create your degree: American Studies, Theatre Arts, English, Creative Writing, Media Writing, Film and Television Studies, Broadcast Media or History.
You can also choose subjects from other faculties. For example, subjects that are often combined with Theatre Arts vary from Creative Writing to Business Management and Marketing.
