Valuing people - your rights at work
Valuing people
We recognise people are at the centre of everything we do and the quality of our relationships has a direct impact on our performance. We need our staff to treat each other, students and visitors with courtesy and respect. Only by valuing people for their abilities, irrespective of personal differences, can we really ensure that we can all work together in harmony. The Living our Values booklet provides details of the competencies and behaviours expected of everyone.
Equality and Diversity policy
- This policy supports this further stating: "By consistently living our values, we seek to eliminate those things that undermine or are harmful to anyone involved in the activities of our University. We therefore believe that unlawful discrimination, intimidation or harassment of anyone connected with the University, specifically related to their race, religion or belief, age, gender reassignment, sex, sexual orientation, disability, marital or partnership status or maternity and pregnancy cannot be tolerated. In addition we strive to advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people from these protected groups. However, as a learning organisation we will provide an environment where people can address and debate differences and constantly reflect on practices".
Harassment Policy (under review)
- This policy currently states that we are "committed to providing an environment that is free of harassment. No member of staff should have to worry about coming to work because of the fear of harassment, bullying or abuse. The University recognises that all forms of harassment are unacceptable and will respect the particular sensitivity of sexual, religious and racial harassment, bullying, age or any other form of complaints and their consequences. Any incidents of harassment will be regarded extremely seriously.".
Your rights at work
We are dedicated to raising awareness of equality issues through training and development and sincerely hope that you will not encounter any discrimination while you are with us. However, if you feel that you have been treated differently or are being harassed or bullied because of your sexual orientation, or a false perception of your sexual orientation we need to know this. Where we do know about this we will ensure that the appropriate action is taken to get it stopped.
We would hope that we could resolve any issues on an informal basis in the first instance. Please feel free to contact any member of the Equality and Diversity Team for a confidential chat. If you would prefer not to contact E&D then you can contact the Chair of the LGBT Action Group or the Employee Assistance program, again this will be in complete confidence.
If we find that the matter cannot be resolved informally, or is too serious to resolve informally, you would need to invoke the grievance procedure, please contact the E&D team or your Union Representative for more details.
