Induction and career development
Induction and onboarding
It is strongly recommended that all new employees attend the central staff induction event and visit our onboarding web site. These are designed to help you settle into your role at the University. The central event includes a brief session on Equality and Diversity awareness and the onboarding site has a link to the Equality and Diversity in the workplace online module. All staff are expected to complete this module. You will receive an email letting you know when the next induction session has been arranged. In addition to this you should receive a local induction in your area.
Career Development
Development and promotion/progression should form part of your discussion with your line manager as part of your Development and Performance Review (DPR). Within this discussion you should be talking to your manager about your ambitions, opportunities and any skills gaps that would prevent you from progressing. From this information you can then decide what development is required to enable you to progress in the future.
Reviewee and Reviewer training are available to all employees to help you get the most from your DPR.
Our central staff development programme is open to all staff but you will have to have the agreement of you manager to attend.
When you feel you are ready for progression, you can apply for any vacant post. All vacancies are open to all existing staff. Some vacancies will be advertised internally only in the first instance.
There may be other opportunities to develop without actually being promoted - i.e. taking on additional responsibilities, undertaking projects, attending cross university working groups/committees or undertaking a side-ways move or secondment to gain more varied experience.
