Why do managers need specialist guidance?

Sexual orientation can be a complex area, especially for managers who are not lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) themselves or who do not know any LGB people.

Historically there has often been hostility towards people whose sexual orientation was seen to be different from the social and societal norm, in fact, gross indecency between males, a broad term that was understood to encompass most or all male homosexual acts was deemed illegal in the UK until 1967.  Today, consensual homosexual acts between adults are still illegal in approximately 36% countries of the world, in 40 of these, only male-male sex is outlawed.  See Lesbian and Gay right in the world map.

As a result of this LGB people can and do have different life experiences to heterosexual people.  We believe in ensuring that everyone in the University has the right to reach their full potential, regardless of differences.  This guidance has, therefore, been produced to assist managers in understanding some of the negative experiences and potential barriers often found in the work place.

Most managers and supervisors will, at sometime, work with LGB staff so please take time to read this guidance.
