Legal protection of LGB people at work

LGB people have the same protection under UK and European legislation as heterosexual people.  LGB staff are protected from discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation based on their sexual orientation (or a perception of their sexual orientation).  This also includes the right for a person not to be treated differently because he or she is associated with someone who has a particular sexual orientation.

Examples of anti-gay bullying and harassment (Stonewall):

  • Making homophobic insults and threats
  • Making unnecessary and degrading references to an individual's sexual orientation
  • Engaging in banter or making jokes about a person's sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation
  • Outing a colleague without their permission
  • Spreading rumours or gossip about an individual's sexual orientation
  • Asking an LGB colleague intrusive questions about their private life
  • Making assumptions and judgements about a colleague based on their sexual orientation
  • Using religious belief to justify anti-gay bullying and harassment
