EDC Terms of Reference

The Equality and Diversity Committee (EDC) is responsible to the University's Executive for the oversight of the operation of the University's Equality Schemes throughout the University's Activities.  The EDC is responsible for creating, developing and deciding upon strategies that will embed equality and diversity in the values and behaviours of the University in support of its corporate objectives and key performance indicators.  The EDC would be responsible for ensuring the University meets its legal obligations under Equality legislation by:                                                                                               

Eliminating unlawful discrimination/harassment  

  • Review and monitor statistics to identify where there may potentially be unlawful discrimination or harassment and develop strategies to address these problems
  • Annually review and evaluate the effectiveness of the Equality Schemes and the appropriate action plans
  • To ensure that the appropriate Equality Impact Assessments are being carried out on all activities within the Faculty/Department

Promoting equality and good relations and positive attitudes between persons of different equality groups

  • To decide on ways to promote the effective implementation of the University's Equality Schemes and action plans
  • To decide upon strategies that ensure E&D is embedded in all activities of the University
  • To provide support and guidance to enable Managers to manage and promote equality and diversity across the University
  • Provide support and guidance to The E&D Team in the arrangements for an Annual Diversity Awareness Week

Promoting positive attitudes towards disabled persons and take steps to take account of people's disabilities

  • To make decisions on strategies that ensure effective promotion and implementation of the Disability Equality Scheme and action plan

EDC Communication Responsibilities

  • To report the decisions and recommendations of the EDC and its subgroups to Executive, Council, Academic Board and CMT  (as appropriate) on an ongoing basis
  • To submit an annual report to Council on the operation of the Equality Schemes
  • To establish communication strategies through which Equality and Diversity principles may be promoted and mainstreamed across the University
  • To identify, promote and disseminate examples of good practice
  • To oversee and monitor the activity of the Disability Co-ordinators Subgroup, Race Equality Subgroup, the Sexual Orientation Working Group and groups from the other strands that may be set up in future
  • To establish additional subgroups and working groups where appropriate to investigate, report on and devise policies for other equality strands
  • Establish effective two-way communication between the EDC , its subgroups and the Faculty/Department groups.
  • Co-ordinate actions from the Equality Scheme Action plans and ensure they are included on the Faculty/Departments business action plans.
